It all started in a cubicle

SHANNON

I was 24 and realized that I couldn’t keep up with the conversations that everyone else was having through the cubicles. My grandpa wore hearing aids from a young age, but not 24…I COULDN’T POSSIBLY BE LOSING MY HEARING, COULD I?

The past nearly 3 decades have been a wild ride. Four (or is it five?) pairs of hearing aids later, I’m now profoundly deaf and facing bilateral cochlear implant surgery. I’ve been through all the stages of grieving my hearing loss, and it’s never linear. Some days I don’t think (much) about it, and some days I feel all the things. I’ve learned some stuff, and I’ve wondered if I’ve learned anything at all.

But what I’ve always felt was isolated. Lonely. That’s why I created this community. The support I’ve longed for all these years. The collective knowledge of others who have walked this same path and found solutions that work for them, that might work for you too.

Together is a nice place to be.

YOU CAN FIND ME:

Meetings that could have been an email, people who burst someone else’s bubble, power dynamics, or bad acoustics

I'm NOT ABOUT:

Traveling light, good grammar, dresses with pockets, plenty of alone time, and holiday magic

I BELIEVE IN:

This community is a home for anyone who refuses to be defined by their hearing loss Our mission is to empower deaf and hard of hearing women to carve out their place in the professional world or as entrepreneurs, modeling accessibility in big and small ways. We're here to share experiences, offer support, and provide resources that cater specifically to our unique challenges and triumphs. Welcome to a space where your ambitions are understood and your achievements celebrated.

I hope you’ll join me as we create a sisterhood where everyone has something to contribute, and something to learn.

I always say deafness is a silent disability: you can’t see, and it’s not life-threatening, so it has to touch your life in some way in order for it to be on your radar.
